An update has emerged on Leeds target Freddie Woodman, regarding Bournemouth’s interest in the stopper.

What’s the talk?

According to the Chronicle Live, Freddie Woodman could be set for a move to AFC Bournemouth on loan following a failed bid from Leeds.

The report claims the Lillywhites are still interested in signing the shot-stopper, but Newcastle could send him out on loan to the Cherries for a season-long loan if Victor Orta does not return with a reasonable offer for the former England youth international.

Should Leeds sign Woodman?

Bielsa needs him

Victor Orta must act swiftly to secure a deal for Woodman as Marcelo Bielsa needs him. If the Leeds chief does not move quickly then it could allow Bournemouth to reach an agreement with Newcastle to take him on loan and leave the Whites needing to look elsewhere in the market for an addition.

Bielsa needs him at Elland Road following Kiko Casilla’s departure earlier this month. The Spaniard joined Elche CF on a season-long loan deal that has left Illan Meslier as the club’s only senior goalkeeper heading into the 2021/22 campaign.

Casilla was needed in nine matches last season, including three in the Premier League, which shows that Leeds need to bring in a senior head to play back-up to Meslier. Not only that, but Woodman could come in and provide some serious competition for the number one jersey, instead of just being a reliable back-up.

Woodman caught the eye in the 2019/20 and 2020/21 campaigns on loan to Swansea in the Championship. He managed to keep 32 clean sheets in 88 appearances – conceding 88 goals. This shows that he has the quality to potentially push the Frenchman for his position in Bielsa’s side, creating healthy competition for places and helping both players to improve themselves because of it.

Ex-Kilmarnock boss Lee Clarke lavished praise on the “unbelievable” goalkeeper. Clarke pointed to his communication, shot-stopping and distribution as being top-class.

He told The Athletic: “I knew he was an outstanding young keeper and had all the attributes. The tough thing was I had an experienced goalkeeper in Jamie MacDonald in the team — that was causing one or two issues in terms of what I wanted to do.

“But I knew I was bringing a talented goalkeeper in. Freddie’s communication, his shot-stopping and his distribution skills are second to none. He’s an unbelievable professional and works extremely hard at his game.”

Therefore, £5.5k-per-week beast could be a much-needed, quality, addition to Leeds’ ranks and that is why Orta must do all he can to ensure that he is at the club next season.
