Man Utd could sign Raphael Varane this week or they are close to walking away, depending on who you believe…

We thought The Harry Kane Saga would drag but Manchester United’s pursuit of Raphael Varane is perhaps becoming even more tiresome…

Some encouragement for United fans can be taken from Marca. Apparently, a deal with Real Madrid worth £42million is close to being agreed, with the two clubs in negotiations after personal terms between Varane and the Red Devils were agreed.

The Mirror, though, suggests United remain wary of being played again. They have never quite got over being used by Sergio Ramos for an improved contract at Real and the United hierarchy won’t be certain that Varane isn’t playing a similar game until he has signed.

Which, of course, United could help speed along by simply coughing up for Varane, rather than nit-picking over a few euros for a player who could make a huge difference at Old Trafford.

F365 Says: Ignore baseless opinions, Varane could be signing of the season

Alternatively, United might look elsewhere and the Daily Mail reckons a bid will be submitted for Jules Kounde.

But the Sevilla defender is reportedly wanted alongside Varane, rather than as an alternate target.

Kounde is attracting interest from Chelsea, Tottenham and Real Madrid but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to be attracted by the 22-year-old’s potential and versatility, with the France star capable of playing at right-back.

Top ten biggest spenders in Europe so far this summer

United might think they have problems with Varane, but the difference in valuations over the defender seems like peanuts when you consider the gulf between Manchester City and Tottenham over Harry Kane.

The Sun got very excited last Friday when it emerged that Kane’s brother had been telling everyone at his wedding that Daniel Levy was ready to green light a £160million exit for the centre-forward.

Not that City had agreed to pay such a figure and nor would they. A source has told The Telegraph: “We would never pay that figure.”

But The Sun is still insisting that the champions remain determined to land Kane and Jack Grealish in a double deal for £225million.

City are apparently expecting some progress when both players return to Spurs and Villa next week after their summer break.

Should Kane remain out of reach then City are intent on using the same Plan B as Chelsea.

Thomas Tuchel has apparently pinpointed Robert Lewandowski as his preferred alternative to his primary target – Erling Haaland – and City have similar intentions if Spurs won’t budge over Kane.

The Daily Mail reckons Pep Guardiola will offer Lewandowski the new challenge he apparently fancies, with the Poland striker having only two years to run on his Bayern Munich contract.

F365 Features: Ten Liverpool players Klopp liked but lost

Liverpool are looking for midfielders this summer, but they could lose another…

With Gini Wijnaldum having already left, for reasons he has stated here, and doubts over Jordan Henderson’s future, reports suggest West Ham are targeting Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The Daily Express tout Matheus Periera as David Moyes no.1 target but West Brom are digging their heels in over a potential £25million deal, with a loan with the obligation to buy a possibility.

If the Baggies refuse to do business, then the Hammers could turn to Oxlade-Chamberlain as they look for a replacement for Jesse Lingard.
