Kelvin Benjamin believes that Joe Judge is something of a tight end himself.
Now-former Giants tight end (and former wide receiver) Benjamin was released on Wednesday after a reported blow-up between he and head coach Judge, but it’s apparently not the first time the two have butted heads.
After Benjamin’s release, the veteran pass-catcher went scorched earth on the Giants and Judge, claiming that his stay with New York was nothing more than a “hoax.”
“I have a perspective on Joe Judge,” Benjamin said, via NJ.com’s Zack Rosenblatt. “He’s not a coach that can ever win a Super Bowl because he sits there and cusses all day. You can tell he’s one-sided about everything. He’s a know-it-all. That’s not how it’s supposed to work. We all can learn from each other. We’re all humans at the end of the day. The true colors will come out.”
Benjamin said the genesis of his issues with the organization surrounded his weight: Benjamin said he weighed in at 265 pounds after minicamp, showing up to training camp at 268 pounds. The team wanted him to lose 14 pounds between minicamp and training camp, and Benjamin said he added muscle that caused his weight to rise a bit.
The Giants would, in turn, opt to fine Benjamin for coming into camp 17 pounds overweight.
New York signed Benjamin with the understanding that he would be converting from wide receiver to tight end, given the extra bulk on his frame. He won’t get his shot.
“I don’t want to bash anyone, but I just felt like Joe has had it out to get me since I walked into that team building,” Benjamin said. “It never felt right. The guy never even had a conversation with me until the day they signed me. …
“To be honest, man, I just felt like it was all a hoax,” Benjamin said. “I felt like they didn’t give me a chance. I finished the conditioning. I finished all of that. I did what I was supposed to do. Everybody in the building was telling me I looked great. They never wanted the narrative to be good about me.”
Narrative or not, Benjamin will have to try to prove how good he is elsewhere.
