Manchester United have received a big injury boost ahead of their Premier League clash with Aston Villa after striker Edinson Cavani was declared ready for action.

What’s the word?

The 34-year-old is yet to start for the Red Devils this season due to personal issues and a back injury picked up in a behind-closed-doors friendly, but United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that he’s now available for selection.

“He’s in the squad tomorrow, he’s been training, and now he feels ready to contribute,” the Norwegian revealed in Friday’s press conference.

“He came on against Wolverhampton, then he got a slight strain in the international break when we had a game, and he’s ready again. He’s worked really hard and diligently, and hopefully, he’ll have an impact as he did last season.”

Solskjaer then teased the prospect of summer signing Cristiano Ronaldo and Cavani playing alongside each other, forming an experienced partnership with dozens of major trophies between them.

“It’s exciting to see those two together, I’m sure that’ll be a good partnership as well, wanting to be on the end of things. We’ve seen some teams dropping deep against us, not giving space in behind and they’re definitely two boys you’d like to see in around the goal in that scenario, I can see those two working well together,” the manager concluded.

Solskjaer will be delighted

News that Cavani will be able to play some part against Villa this afternoon will surely leave Solskjaer feeling delighted.

The Uruguay international was instrumental to United’s improvement last term, scoring 17 goals and providing a further six assists in 39 appearances.

Although the arrival of five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo has eased the goalscoring burden on the 34-year-old this time around, his presence will still be a huge positive for the 20-time English champions.

Solskjaer’s charges will be hoping to maintain their unbeaten start to the new Premier League season when Villa come to town, and their chances of doing just that may have significantly increased with Cavani’s return confirmed.
