Few kickers have been as dominant as Justin Tucker since he arrived in the NFL in 2012. Now, the Ravens place kicker now has another record to go along with his impressive resume.
With Baltimore trailing the Lions by a point with 3 seconds left in the game, Tucker set up at the Ravens’ own 40-yard line to attempt the game-winner. The NFL’s most accurate kicker in history delivered, drilling an NFL-record 66-yard field goal as time expired to win the game 19-17 for Baltimore.
The previous record was set in 2013 by Matt Prater, who drilled a 64-yard field goal against the Titans. He also made a game-winning 62-yard field goal for the Cardinals against the Vikings earlier in 2021, though the trust in his leg backfired on Sunday as the Jaguars returned a 68-yard attempt for a 109-yard touchdown return.
Prior to Sunday’s attempt, Tucker had made just one field goal from 60-plus yards in five career tries: His longest attempt came on a 65-yard try in 2018 against the Chargers, but his longest successful kick was in 2013, a last-minute 61-yarder against the Lions.
During that 2013 game, Tucker made six field goals to single-handedly beat Detroit 18-16.
Longest field goals in NFL history
There had been 24 successful field goals from at least 60 yards heading into Week 3 of the NFL season.
Here are the top 13 longest field goals in NFL history, according to Stathead and including Tucker’s Sunday attempt.
Brett Maher might not have the record in distance, but he does hold the distinction of being the only kicker to have a perfect 3 for 3 record on kicks from beyond 60 yards. Prater’s kick-six on Sunday was the first unsuccessful attempt of his career from 60 yards out. Greg Zuerlein and Sebastain Janikowski are the only other kickers that are perfect on multiple attempts — both 2 for 2.
Kickers have also attempted seven field goals from at least 70 yards, though all have been unsuccessful. Janikowski holds the record for the longest attempt when he tried to make a 76-yard kick in 2008.
Tucker coming in clutch
The Ravens have almost always been able to rely on Tucker. Among kickers with at least 100 field goal attempts, his 90.7 percent success rate is the most accurate in NFL history.
But Tucker has taken his success to another level in critical situations. According to ESPN’s Jamison Hensley, Tucker has made all 16 field goal tries he has attempted within the final minute of regulation of games.
Justin Tucker is not only the most accurate kicker in NFL history. But he’s the most clutch.
Tucker improved to 16-for-16 in his NFL career on field goals in the final minute of regulation.
