Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene feels that the Virat Kohli-led Indian team is lacking in role clarity.

Indian team lost two big games

But to everyone’s dismay, India have lost both their games against Pakistan and New Zealand in the mega event, and their chances to qualify for the semis looks very unclear.

India’s difficulty to bat first in UAE, once again haunted them as they could register a paltry score of 110/7 against New Zealand on Sunday.

Ishan Kishan paired with KL Rahul in the opening slot with Rohit Sharma batting at No.3. However, the change didn’t go well for the team as Ishan got out for four runs, and Rohit could add just 14 runs before being dismissed to Ish Sodhi.

Jaywardene noted that the current Indian side did not play a T20I match together since a long time before entering the tournament and also stressed on lack of role clarity.

I just feel that the role clarity and how you want to construct is something that I see, which is lacking,” Jayawardene told ESPNCricinfo.

At the same time the form of players coming into the tournament and how they going to set themselves up because India as a team hasn’t played T20 cricket for a while. I know they had a couple of warm-up games and looked good but they kept changing the personnel at the top of the order.

“I think India is always going to dominate with the bat and you see their batting is letting them down,” he added.

India will play their next match against Afghanistan on Wednesday at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

India must win their remaining three games and also depend on some results to go their way if they stand to qualify for the semi-final stage.
